For Mother Earth: My Environmental Creed

Several years ago I gave a talk on Spirituality and Sustainability at a United Nations NGO conference in New York. In considering the depth of this topic, I realized that what humanity needs now is a set of environmental values that informs our actions. These values will help us manifest a future that sustains humans as well as our fellow creatures. Without these values, we know not what we do. My Environmental Creed: I recognize the interconnectedness of all life and acknowledge the consequences of my actions on other species and humans in locations near and distant. I realize that human well-being is derived from the well-being of the earth and its elements – soil, trees, food, water, air, weather patterns and biodiversity of species. As I coexist with other species, I have a responsibility to protect their habitat and survival. In considering the welfare and survival of other species … Continued

How Do Electromagnetic Fields Affect Human Health?

What are Electromagnetic Fields? Electromagnetism is a force that exists between objects composed of atoms with electrical charge. It holds the atoms together that make up our bodies and objects in the visible world of form, governs the interaction of molecules and is necessary for all chemical reactions to occur. The movement of electrons generates an electrical field, measured in voltage. When there is a flow of electrons through a conducting material (such as the human body), an electrical current is produced, which then generates a magnetic field in the space that surrounds the conducting material. The rate and amount of current flow through the conducting material determines the strength   of the magnetic field. Magnetic fields can attract and trap charged particles. Amazingly, the magnetic field produced by the flow of current through a conductor is infinite, is not easily shielded, passes through objects and walls, and travels at the … Continued

The Mystery of Meditation; the Power of an Altar

Sometimes meditation practice grants us mysterious rewards. Almost 40 days ago on June 21 at the 2015 summer solstice celebration in New Mexico, I committed to practicing two 31 minute meditations for 1000 days, as part of the Kundalini Yoga Level 3 teacher training requirements. I have been travelling and teaching in Spain and Belgium since then, and have been blessed to be able to keep up with these daily meditations. Today I returned home from Belgium after a long day of travel. I have a little room I often meditate in. It needed a good cleaning and some re-organizing. I removed the clutter from the shelf that I use as an altar, wiped it down with a damp cloth and set upon it a picture of Baba Siri Chand, a small calligraphic ink painting by Thich Nhat Hanh that says “Flow as a River” and a large crystal. I cleaned … Continued

Can Depression Be Relieved by Yoga and Meditation?

Like all of you, I was shocked and saddened by Robin Williams suicide on August 11, 2014. I considered him a brilliant comedian and fine actor and remember him with a smile. When my children were younger, we gathered together to watch Jumanji, Night at the Museum, Patch Adams, Flubber and Aladdin – and knew we would have a good time. He captivated us and lifted our spirits with his staccato style humor and seemingly boundless energy. What a tragic loss to the world and his family. God bless you Robin. May you be at peace. Thank you for what you gave us. I was surprised to learn that Robin had suffered from longstanding depression and addiction – such a contrast to some of the characters he played on screen! I thought about depression, reflecting on some of the people I know whose lives have been crippled because of it, … Continued

Women’s Moon Centers and Yogic Secrets of Sacred Sex

The Kundalini yoga tradition teaches that women have 11 moon centers – erogenous zones of the body that are activated at different phases of the lunar cycle and influence our emotions and way of viewing the world. Our psyche is focused on one of the moon centers for 2½ days and then moves on to the next. The order of the moon centres is different for each woman – it’s up to us and our sexual partner to discover which one predominates on a particular day. The fluctuations in sexual desire during the menstrual cycle interweave with the rhythm of our moon centers to determine how we express ourselves sexually. When we are attentive to the pattern of our moon centers and menstrual cycle, we gain more awareness of ourselves as sexual and fertile beings. During foreplay, have some fun by inviting your sexual partner to discover your most active … Continued

Eleven Steps to Activate Your Destiny

Each of us has a unique role, a sacred contract with our soul – a mission and destiny, which if followed, brings much fulfillment and happiness – to ourselves and others. Sometimes we don’t recognize or accept our destiny and turn away from it, resulting in frustration and sadness from unfulfilled dreams and lack of meaning. We may deny our destiny because we are afraid of the commitment it requires, we don’t believe it is possible, or feel we are not up to the task. We may ignore or push away the inner voice that guides us onward. When we walk towards our destiny, though, we are filled with meaning and supported by the universe. Yogi Bhajan writes: The magnetic field on which the current of life runs computes thought waves and it is connected with the Supreme Computer; this connection is known as destiny. Everybody is born with a … Continued

Guidelines for Meditation

The quality of our meditation is dependent on many things, specifically posture, concentration, knowing what elements to focus on, skillful redirection of one’s focus, being accepting and allowing of “what is” without “running away or running towards”, being able to locate our awareness fully in a specific part of the body, and the length of time of our practice. The following tips may help you to improve the quality of your meditation while affirming that every moment of practice is a victory. Carefully understand the specific areas of focus for the meditation before you begin i.e. tip of nose, third eye point, mantra or breath, place in body, chakra, bandhas, visualization etc. Set a timer for the length of time you will meditate. Sit with a straight spine, chin pulled in slightly. If needed, use a sitting cushion, bench or chair to sit comfortably straight. Keep as physically still as … Continued
